Index to MS 4935 Early Families in Cleveland Project Records

The Early Families in Cleveland Project was sponsored by the Genealogical Committee of the Western Reserve Historical Society as part of Cleveland's Bicentennial celebration in 1996.  The program was designed to admit to membership those individuals who resided in Cuyahoga County or whose ancestors resided in Cuyahoga County prior to the date established by the project for the person's or ancestor's ethnic group.  The year was determined by adding ten years to the date of the formation of the ethnic group's first ogranization in Cuyahoga County.  Each submission was required to supply evidence of the applicant's residence in the county, which was then reviewed by the Early Families in Cleveland Board.  If approved, applicatnts received a certificate and the documentation became the property of the Western Reserve Historical Society for research purposes.  This collection contains a variety of documents used for evidence needed to accompany the applications, including birth and baptismal certificates, census forms, church records, correspondence, death certificates, deeds, descendancy charts, ledgers, marriage licenses, photographs, internment records, tax lists, and wills.

This index allows researchers to search the applications by name and provides the birth date, death date, and nationality of people accepted into the project.  More detailed information, as described above, is provided at the WRHS Research Center Reading Room. Manuscript number 4935 Early Families in Cleveland Project Records contains all of the applications and supporting documentation. See the finding aid to this collection for more information about the collection and what it contains.
